I highly recommend this book without question. It only covers some sample problems and shows you how to do those. The most beautiful and poignant scenes, however, definitely go to Odran (with her friend Kelan coming in a close second). The book then flashes back to the first meeting between Julian & Ruth. While good books make me feel for the characters, the great ones make me feel things myself. "The Alternative Medicine Hoax" is a much needed antidote to these blandishments that I recommend to anyone contemplating using unproven or untested treatments. I have this calendar on my desk at this moment and is on my Christmas list every year. I also found it very distracting when Halpern decided to segue into Greensleeves at one point. This is a good bedtime story for your the kids. I somehow liked it's approach, mainly because it avoids a lot of descriptory jargons and talks straight in mathematics: the language of scientists and engineers!
